THE LIBRARY OF QUALITY
Purpose & Scope:
Like most of us that are close to this industry (Quality & Manufacturing), over the past 15 to 30 years, we have discovered quality management systems have not significantly changed since 1941. Variation still exists in everything, and standard deviation is still the metric we use to measure it.
What has changed, is the marketing of quality management tools and best practices. This change over time has scewed the practice so heavily toward the statistical side. I find quality professionals between 1 and 5 years, know very little about the practical and integration side, or as Shainin would say the "remedial journey", before they jump into the statistical analysis side.
The Missing Links I find most often at companies; the integration between, DFMEA, PFMEA, Control & Gage Plans, standardized work instructions/ training, audits and problem solving. Very simple and very effective integration. Most of these tools are marketed individually, leaving the mis-perception they are stand alone tools.
The purpose of this Library of Quality is to help balance the practical core principles and practices side of quality management systems, with the diagnostic (statistical) side. In order to accomplish this, we have taken a page out of the caveman's handbook, and start writing it on the walls (blogs) of caves (websites) for the next generation and beyond, to see and continue using long after.
This Library of Quality journey will not happen overnight, it will take support, time, patience, labor and commitment. I believe it is a worthwhile journey and I hope you will too. I am inviting you to join us and help us, by joining the Library of Quality and submitting practical items you hold important to leave behind, and to share.
